Thomas Sheehan: Artist Statement

My work is realistic in the classical sense, strongly influenced by Michaelangelo, Caravaggio, John Singer Sargent and probably by every other artist I have ever seen. Each artist has their own viewpoint, their message, their art a personal reflection. I can't help looking at art, all art, and not be challenged. By the style, the inspiration, the dedication. I hope to find what it takes to achieve personal success, that is, in an artistic sense, as I understand it to be.

My work, in pastel or oil, explores a dramatic interplay of light, shadow, texture and color nuances.

I work from a series of photographs, lighting and arranging the figure or still life to achieve a sense of drama and evocative feelings, transferring these images to paper or canvas. I then refer back to the original still life or figure for additional details.
